Flangeguards Spray Shields

Safety Shields also known as flange guards are used in a variety of industries, where their primary application is the prevention of harmful spray-outs and mist formation from failing pipe joints, of toxic, corrosive and dangerous liquids such as acid, oil or steam.

Pipe joint failures have been responsible for a large number of high profile industrial incidents around the world. Acid, oil and steam jet spray-outs have resulted in many severe personal injuries, either directly or through consequent fires and explosions. Industry regulators have recognized the importance of shielding pipe joints (flanges, valves, couplings, hoses) to prevent jet leaks or the formation of explosive mist. Such spray-outs can have catastrophic effects, in many cases resulting in fire or explosions causing considerable plant down time, capital expenditure and even loss of life.

Safety or Spray Shields offer the last line of defense. They are not designed to contain the leak indefinitely; they are designed to control the leak safely allowing liquid release vertically. Ultimately, they prevent harmful spray out.

Not all spray shields are the same.

The video below illustrates how FLANGEGUARDS safety shields manage to prevent dangerous spray-outs and mist formations, improving safety and reducing maintenance costs. The tests were conducted in FLANGEGUARDS’ factory lab and clearly demonstrate what happens when safety shields of poor quality and/or bad installation fail, potentially resulting in severe personal injury or collateral damage.

 

 

 

Simple and Quick Installation

Installing FLANGEGUARDS safety shields is both simple and quick, requiring no tools. Two shield designs are available, fabric and stainless steel. Both are made to fit specific joint/fitting types and sizes.

PTFE Safety Shields

Our most popular shield, compatible with practically all corrosive chemicals due to the technical fabric and Teflon/Kevlar thread used for stitching. This shield is typically used for acids, caustics, solvents, fuel, lubrication and seal oil applications.

Maximum working temperature: 235 °C / 450 °F

Flange Ratings: ANSI 150 – 600 lb / DIN PN6 – PN40

Pipe sizes: Standard; 1/2” (15mm) – 24” (600mm)

Applications: Standard; Flanges, Elbow, Tees, Couplings.

PTFE-CLEAR Safety Shields

This shield is generally used for applications where sight of the flange/joint must not be obscured. Liquid releases can be seen within the shield, providing visual indication. It should be noted however, that we do not recommend this shield for applications where external liquid / condensation may result in a false indication of leakage.

The shield is suitable for a range of corrosive chemicals due to the technical fabric and Teflon/Kevlar thread used for stitching. For strong acids and higher temperatures and pressures, please consider the standard PTFE or ST/ST shield. This shield is typically used for acids, caustics, solvents, fuel, lubrication and seal oil applications.

Flange Ratings: ANSI 150 – 300 lb / DIN PN6 – PN25

Pipe sizes: Standard; 1/2” (15mm) – 24” (600mm)

PVC Safety Shields

This shield is made from heat-sealed PVC and is designed to provide a ‘budget’ or short-term solution for low corrosion, pressure and temperature applications. This shield is typically used for water-based liquids and particularly low-concentration chemicals. Each shield comes with external litmus indicator patch.

Maximum working temperature: 60 °C/ 150 °F

Flange Ratings: ANSI 150 – 300 lb / DIN PN6 – PN25

Pipe sizes: 1/2” (15mm) – 24” (600mm)

Applications: Flanges, Elbows, Tees, Couplings

STAINLESS STEEL Safety Shields

This shield comprises outer 316 st/st band, inner 4-layer st/st mesh and external quick-release clamp. The key design feature is the internal mesh which effectively diffuses all pressure from the release, resulting in a safe drip. Equally important is the exact alignment of the shield and ‘crimped’ central mesh section, as other ill-fitting shields may create additional lateral spray-outs or dangerous mist formation.

The Stainless Steel safety shield is typically used for fuel, lubrication, seal & hydraulic oil, steam and other chemicals. Its design and materials of construction make it suitable for applications involving high temperature and pressure.

Maximum working temperature: 500 °C/ 930 °F

Flange Ratings: ANSI 150 – 1500 lb / DIN PN6 – PN100

Pipe sizes: Standard; 1/2” (15mm) – 24” (600mm)
